The Golf is a popular, fantastic car. But in the US, the Jetta is the better choice for those who like to haul stuff. If you can’t decide between the Golf and Jetta TDI, maybe this will help you.
2010 Jetta TDI Generous Trunk Opening Clearance
The Jetta has a separate trunk, which is very versatile. I once bought two 36″x30″ and one 18″x30″ kitchen wall cabinets at Ikea. I backed up my 2010 Jetta TDI to the loading area and proceeded to fold down the rear seats. To my surprise, the seats didn’t need to go down at all! Even more suprising was the fact that I was able to lay all the cabinet boxes and material flat on the trunk floor. And to top it all off, there was no funky contortion necessary to maneuver the gigantic packages in and out of the car. It was cavernous! Continue reading… »
As the weather cools down, the plucky TDIs will continue to forge ahead. However, they will do so with slightly damped performance and economy. The reason for this is mystic at best. However, many website forums out there point to winter blends in diesel fuel, for instance. I will take a different approach and blame air density. Continue reading… »
To the amazement of everyone, the trip from SC to CA only took 2 days. Considering the fact that this was a solo cross-country drive, it didn’t take long at all. The Jetta TDI performed remarkably well. There was always plenty of torque for passing at highway speeds without having to downshift from 6th gear. Combine the power with efficiency, and what you have is a sleepy little car that is great fun, roomy, and can sip enough fuel to get you and some friends from coast to coast for less than $150 in fuel.
When going across the country, you see many interesting things. The most interesting by far on this trip was seeing Arizona close all of their rest stops. Most of these rest stops were completely rebuilt. They were completed less than a year ago, but nobody gets the chance to use them because of some budget issue.
Not good, especially since this god forsaken state employs speed cameras on Eisenhower’s Interstate system! Nothing like scraping some revenue from the use of a federally funded highway system.
Here’s a tip, Arizona: Ditch the speed cameras and open your rest stops. Only then will you not look like a communist state.
Along any cross-country trip, you hit a sweet spot. Well, at around 6am on November 2, 2009, the full moon was setting to the West and a bright sun was rising from the East. At one point, I was traveling West on Interstate 10 and the road, moon, and sun lined up. That’s gotta be a good omen, right?
Driving across the county takes a commitment, patience, and courage. Getting to the halfway point is oh, so nice. This is about 1,300 miles into the journey with another 1,300 to go. The fuel consumption stats are 47.1 MPG from Rock Hill, SC to Fort Worth, TX.
Found this amazing video about the Renault 2.0 CDI, then I realized that it’s pretty much the same thing as the new 2.0 TDI engine in the 2009 and newer Volkswagen Jetta/Golf TDI’s. There are a few mechanical differences (timing chain vs. timing belt), but this is pretty much the most amazing computer-generated animation I’ve seen.
Are you in the market for a new car? Does your credit report suck? Do you favor a used car over new? If your credit score is lower than 600, have no fear. Let me explain a little about how car financing is done these days. I’m going to share with you how I ended up financing a new car in September 2009. Continue reading… »
